a. Use transfer belt (gait belt) to support a person who is unsteady or disabled. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. The belt should be applied over the clothing and under the breasts. Do not apply the belt buckle over the spine. Tighten the belt so it is snug. You should be able to put 4 fingers under the belt. The belt is removed after the procedure.
b. Check with the nurse and care plan before using a transfer/gait belt if the person has the following:
1. Colostomy, ileostomy, gastrostomy, urostomy.
2. A gastric tube. A hernia
3. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
4. An abdominal wound, incision, or drainage tube.
5. Monitoring equipment involving the chest or abdomen.
