a. Keep walkways free from clutter, trash, throw rugs and cords.

b. Use rugs with a non-slip backing. Have residents wear non-slip, sturdy shoes. Make sure shoelaces are tied.

c. Leave furniture in the same place.

d. Assist the residents who are at a higher risk of falling. Pay more attention to them, placing their devices like walkers and wheelchairs closer to them at all times.

e. Lock the wheelchair brakes before transferring the patient in or out of the wheelchair or from the wheelchair to and from the bed.

f. Have the patient wear non-slip, sturdy shoes, and make sure shoelaces are tied.

g. Place the call light within easy reach.

h. Answer call lights right away.

i. Resident should avoid wearing clothes that are very long and drag on the floor.

j. Clean all spills immediately

k. Place the bed to the lowest position when you are finished with care.

l. Get help when physically moving or transferring the patient. Do not assume that you can do it alone.

m. Offer trips to the bathroom often. Respond to requests for help immediately. Think about how you might feel if you had to wait for help to go to the bathroom.

n. Loose handrails should be reported immediately.

o. If bed alarms are used, check to see if they are working. Check the placement of the patient’s body and the bed alarm.
